Best Epicor Alternatives

Why manufacturers switch from Epicor, and when they should stay

Epicor's cloud-only roadmap has put the question on many agendas. The reason behind a review decides which alternative, if any, makes sense.

A finance director, a plant manager and an IT lead discuss printed reports at a table in a meeting room beside a warehouse, with a forklift visible through a glass door.
The reason for an ERP review is usually clearer to finance and operations than to the software vendor.

Most manufacturers do not review their ERP because they want a new one. They review it because something forces the question: a support date, a renewal, a growth step or a backlog that the current system cannot clear. In 2026, for Epicor customers, the forcing event is often the vendor's own roadmap.

The documented reason: a cloud-only roadmap

On January 6, 2026, Epicor published the dates of its final on-premises feature releases1.

ProductFinal on-premises releaseActive Support endsSustaining Support begins
Epicor Kinetic2028.1, tentatively January 2028December 31, 2029January 1, 2030
Epicor Prophet 212028.1, tentatively May 2028June 30, 2029July 1, 2029
BisTrack Web Browser and API2028.1, tentatively July 2028June 30, 2029July 1, 2029
BisTrack Desktop2026.2, tentatively December 2026December 31, 2028January 1, 2029

Epicor states that future innovation for these products will be delivered exclusively on the Epicor Cloud, and points customers to its Ascend migration programme1. The release does not define what Sustaining Support includes or when security fixes end. Constellation Research noted that the dates are tentative and that support sunsets will force a decision eventually2.

For a manufacturer on on-premises Kinetic, this is the reason a review starts now rather than later. Three years is a short time to choose, implement and stabilise an ERP, and the move to Epicor's own cloud is itself a migration.

Other reasons, and how to tell them apart

The roadmap explains the timing. It rarely explains the whole decision. Buyers in this position usually find one of four further reasons underneath.

  • Deployment preference. Some manufacturers want to keep the system on their own servers after Epicor's on-premises releases end. Global Shop Solutions offers on-premises, cloud and SaaS deployment, and JobBOSS² offers on-premises installation, private hosted cloud and multi-tenant SaaS to US customers34.
  • Fit to the shop. A small high-mix job shop may need quoting, job costing and scheduling more than configurators and multi-site planning. A configure-to-order manufacturer may need the reverse: Infor CloudSuite Industrial, for example, describes support for engineer-to-order, configure-to-order and mixed-mode production with CPQ and MES add-ons5.
  • Licence structure. Per-user licensing limits how many planners, buyers and supervisors work in the system. Acumatica does not charge per user, Global Shop Solutions licenses per concurrent user, and Business Central sells an $8 Team Members licence for limited access637.
  • AI and the office work around production. Epicor's answer is Prism, a portfolio of more than 18 agents embedded in Kinetic8. Other vendors embed agents in their own ERP. A different approach adds AI teammates beside whatever ERP the company keeps: OpenLazarus describes teammates for scheduling, purchasing, quality and quotes that read jobs, routings and inventory from the ERP and write back changes9.

The last reason is the one most easily confused with an ERP problem. If quotes take three days because an estimator is buried in email, a new ERP rarely shortens that. If MRP output cannot be trusted, an AI layer will not fix it either. Naming the reason correctly is the most valuable step in the review.

The case for staying with Epicor

A fair review prices staying. Epicor has sold software to manufacturing, distribution, automotive, building supply and retail businesses for 50 years, and says it serves more than 20,000 businesses around the world1. The company is based in Austin, Texas, and has been owned by the investment firm Clayton, Dubilier & Rice since a sale announced in 202010. Its Prism agents can explain why a production line is behind schedule from live ERP data and documents, explain MRP output logs and extract documents in accounts payable, with actions subject to human oversight and existing role-based security8. Its Ascend programme now covers on-premises customers moving to the cloud and targets go-live in as little as 90 days for qualified deployments11.

Staying is usually right when three things hold: Kinetic fits how the plant actually runs, the customisations are documented and few, and Epicor's cloud quote is competitive. In that case a move to Epicor's cloud preserves the data model, the reports and the training that staff already have.

A quoting coordinator checks a printed drawing against a purchase order while on the phone, with a loading bay and flatbed truck visible behind her.
If the delay is in the front office, the fix may not be a new ERP at all.

A short diagnostic

Answer these before calling any vendor. Each answer points to a different shortlist.

QuestionIf the answer is yes
Do we need to stay on our own servers after 2029?Shortlist ERPs with on-premises options: Global Shop Solutions, JobBOSS²
Is production planning the weak point?Shortlist manufacturing ERPs with planning depth: Infor CloudSuite Industrial, Acumatica, Plex
Is licence cost per user the main complaint?Compare unlimited-user and published per-user models: Acumatica, Business Central
Does Kinetic fit, but the office around it is slow?Price Epicor's cloud and an AI layer beside it, such as OpenLazarus
Is finance consolidation across entities the driver?Include a finance-led suite: NetSuite

The path from here

  1. Write the reason in one sentence, and have the plant manager and the controller agree to it.
  2. Put the Epicor dates in the plan. Work back from the end of Active Support on December 31, 2029, allowing for selection, implementation and a period of parallel running1.
  3. Get two baselines: Epicor's cloud quote, and the cost of the current on-premises system to 2029.
  4. Shortlist no more than three alternatives from the table above, and compare them in the main guide.
  5. Decide what moves first. If the office work is the constraint, it can be addressed before the ERP decision is final.

The review succeeds when the decision is made for a stated reason, with a date, and the people who run the plant recognise the reason as theirs. For what the options cost, read the pricing guide.

Questions buyers ask

Why are companies leaving Epicor?

The most documented reason in 2026 is Epicor's schedule of final on-premises feature releases, which ends new development for on-premises Kinetic after release 2028.1. Other reasons are fit (a job shop on a system built for more complex work, or the reverse), licence and partner costs, and the wish to add AI to the office work around production.

What happens to on-premises Epicor Kinetic after 2028?

Epicor plans the final on-premises feature release, 2028.1, for January 2028. Active Support continues to December 31, 2029, and Sustaining Support starts on January 1, 2030. Epicor has not defined in the release what Sustaining Support includes.

When does staying with Epicor make sense?

When Kinetic fits your production well, your customisations are documented, and Epicor's cloud quote under its Ascend programme compares well with the alternatives. A move to Epicor's cloud keeps your data model and your people's training intact.
